“Simple, stylish and furiously addictive. Far and away the best ‘pure’ word game on iOS.”£1.49
At first, the game’s merely pleasant. You drag across a grid of letters to remove words, Boggle-style. Extra strategy is added by gravity, causing unsupported letters to fall. Link at least five letters to wipe out surrounding ones; take out an entire row by using a blue tile.
But then comes Puzzle Mode, ramping up the pressure by adding a row each time you make a word. Last long enough and locked letters appear, removed by using them in words comprising at least the number of letters on their badges. Master that and Rush Mode is unlocked, with a relentless timer that works its way to the top of the screen every few seconds, adding a row when it gets there, while you frantically study the board and scream: ‘Why are there so many ‘I’s!?’
Whether you’re a word-game dabbler or a recovering Tetris addict with a penchant for letters, SpellTower is essential.
