The app is powered by Push Pop Press, a publishing platform founded by ex-Apple employees — and it shows. Packed with smart ways to engage with the raft of multimedia content on offer, it feels like an iOS native app, with intuitive interaction with photos, documentary footage, animations and infographics. Accordingly, the modest initial download balloons to over a gigabyte.

Content is landscape format, which makes for a lot of scrolling on the iPhone version, and the text itself can't be scaled or selected — but this book's more about tapping than reading. Digital publishing has taken a step forward.
